Sarvi on Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s New “Emerging Races” List

Sarvi’s Strength Shows in Enhanced National Recognition

June 18, 2008

EAGAN, Minn. – The Washington, DC-based Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) today announced that Steve Sarvi has been put on the its “Emerging Races” list.

In a press release, the DCCC stated, “In each of these [emerging] races, Democratic candidates have generated excitement in their districts for their campaigns for change.”

As emerging races continue to develop and demonstrate increasing strength, candidates will have an opportunity to qualify for the Red to Blue program.

Last month, the Sarvi campaign conducted a poll that showed the 2nd District race to be highly competitive. Sarvi’s opponent, Rep. John Kline (R-Lakeville), received good-to-excellent performance marks from a meager 39 percent of those surveyed, while 44 percent rated his performance fair-to-poor. In an informed match up, after hearing only one positive statement about Sarvi and nothing negative about Kline, Sarvi outpolled Kline 49 percent to 37 percent.

“Today’s announcement from the DCCC, combined with what we’re hearing and seeing in the district, shows how much potential there is for this district in November,” said Sarvi. “I’m thrilled that the DCCC is excited about this race.”

Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District
Trends in Minnesota’s 2nd District, which encompasses parts or all of Carver, Dakota, Goodhue, LeSueur, Rice, Scott and Washington Counties, are favorable to Democrats. In 2006, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate and now-U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar won every precinct in four of the district’s five largest cities and won the district overall with 53.3 percent of the vote – topping Sen. Mark Dayton’s 2000 results by 10 points. Additionally, the DFL Party has picked up 11 state legislative seats in the district since 2004, giving it a majority of the district’s seats.
